Five Costume Play Guidelines

If you think dressing up and putting on a costume is only reserved for such events as Halloween, Christmas, birthday parties and costume parties, think again. Recently, a fad or fashion of converging on a location showing off their highly crafted costumes, props, and accessories copied from films, games, comics or manga, anime such as Charlie's Angels, Star Trek and others has emerged.

Costume play or cosplay for short, a popular pastime of Japanese teen, has infected the rest of the world. Formerly, one gets to enjoy this colorful, flashy and really amazing event when like-minded teens meet in downtown Tokyo to engage in cosplay. They act out their character, displaying signature poses and actions and generally have fun.

Now, cosplay can be seen in fan events, anime or manga conventions, video game and other product launchings. Lovers of cosplay (they call themselves cosplayers) also put up cosplay parties and events, usually converging in a public center, parks, etc.

It is a fun hobby, giving devotees to it a chance to let loose their imagination and creativity; to wear gorgeous, sexy, original, and outrageous outfits; to roleplay as the characters they admire the most for some time; to play with toys; to show off; and lots more.

Cosplay is a bit different from your usual Halloween costume though. It is more elaborate and faithful to the source to the last elaborate detail. It is because the primary reason in cosplay is to become the character!

For those inspiring to try cosplay and intrigued with its world, here are what you need to know.

1. For first timers, attending an event or convention where there is cosplaying would be a good introduction to it or join a cosplay group or club. There sure will be one in your neighborhood. You can search the internet for such clubs close to your area as well. Joining a group will make cosplaying more fun and you will have someone to guide you in cosplaying.

2. Cosplay a character that you love and can relate to. Cosplaying requires some acting or role playing. You have to become the character. It is easier to do this if you can relate to the role, right?

3. Study the character, his/her mannerism, speech pattern, etc. and some poses. Take note of actions and poses that expresses the character well and come up with a skit to reenact. Practice it until you get the role down pat. Remember, you have to breathe life to the character but do not go overboard with the act.

4. Study the costume and its construction. Check the reference image at every possible angle. Making a costume can be expensive, as costumes must be faithful to the reference material as much as possible. Texture of clothes, the use of silk, PVC etc. may be required. Not only that, the costume also includes accessories, wigs, makeup, props, footwear, etc. You have to be prepared to spend a lot for your hobby. Some cosplayers even buy clothes from artists.

5. Accept advice and constructive criticism from other cosplayers with good grace. Besides, you learn something new and learn to improve your ability to cosplay. Most of all, have fun!
