Who Needs Halloween? Four Other Reasons To Get Into Costumes

Are you like some people, a costume fanatic, who wishes that Halloween came every weekend? Do you find it a bummer that it is only on that day when you can "legally' flaunt your flair, surprise and dazzle everyone with your otherworldly (yet glamorous) get-up but it only happens once a year? Or are you just one of those people who think the year's other regular holidays, are just plain and regular?

Well, that inner rebel wouldn't have to stay bottled up for long. Who needs the 31st of October when you can turn any occasion, yes, even an ordinary day, into a costume party? Liven up your life, break the rules and show tradition the back door. Here are four wacky ideas to get you started; four run of the mill occasions that you could glam up with costumes.

1. Birthdays

As kids, we used to have themed birthday parties where everyone was expected to turn up dressed as cowboys, aliens, or maybe cartoon princesses. Well, now that you're an adult, why should the themed birthday parties end all of a sudden? Be it your own party, your best friend's, or maybe that surprise birthday bash you plan to cook-up for your boss, it's never a bad idea to let your inner kid loose. Besides, we're not getting any younger. At least on birthdays, we can pretend that we are.

2. Thanksgiving

You didn't have to stay awake through your History or Social Studies class to know about it. We have the Mayflower pilgrims to thank for Thanksgiving—which if in case you don't live in the States, would be no different from a harvest festival. Everybody looks forward to a turkey for carving and a sumptuous dinner on a fall night, but what would really bring this holiday to life would be, yeah you've guessed it, a costume party. Don your best period costumes and re-live the night when the America as we know it was yet to be born.

3. Weddings

Tie that knot in style. Garden weddings? A wedding by the beach? A bit too cliché, don't you think? You don't want your (or one of your friend's) special day to appear like it came through an assembly line. And so, aside from personalized vows and your own touches to the flow of the ceremony, an ever livelier, perhaps more romantic, and definitely more unique idea for this day that comes only once in a lifetime—or at least that's what we want it to be—would be a themed wedding. This isn't just about uniformly colored gowns, but even beyond that. What about saying you're “I do's” dressed up as Shakespeare characters and then you could put a happy ending to his story of star-crossed lovers?

4. Fourth of July

What could the fourth reason be? Well, no other than the Fourth of July? (July 1st if you happen to live up north in Canada). Now it's a perfect idea to celebrate birthdays clad in full costume. Here's an appeal to your sense of patriotism, a costume party to celebrate that nation's birthday. It's a holiday after all, so why not grab your friends to a little soiree? Dress up as one of the Founding Fathers (or their unappreciated spouses) and raise a toast to Lady Liberty. Celebrate the fact that you're free to wear whatever may please thee.
